Tech Reflection - Rock Cakes

Today was our fifth session cooking with Mrs Tuipolotu and we made rock cakes. As my partner Ofa is away I was baking by myself. The rock cakes are all different sizes and to me they looked like baked pancakes. I enjoyed cooking this week but I can not wait until we start cooking savoury food. The three most important things we will learn after this orientation is to listen to instructions, measure ingredients correctly, and have the ability to read instruction. If we do this again I will make my rock cakes a bit smaller and more even. Here are the ingredients for rock cakes:

1 1/2 cup with S.R. flour

chocolate chips

 1/2 cup of sugar

1/2 cup of cream

1/4 cup of oil

1 egg

pre heat oven to 180 degrees

NYLD - National Young Leaders Day

This term we had the opportunity to help build our leadership skills by attending the national young leaders day. People like Riley Hathaway and Lisa Tamati. They discussed how they overcame obstacles and how they got to the place they have been able to get to. I found all of them inspiring but Lisa Tamati stood out for me. Her run through death valley and climbing a mountain which was on fire absolutely blew me away. Her story will really help me grow my skills in areas such as leadership and determination. This was an amazing experience which helped me greatly.

M&M's Facts

M&M's is one of the most popular chocolates in the world and is sold in most countries around the world. This week our teachers, Mrs Anderson and Ms Kirkpatrick have flown to the United States to learn from the speakers at the ISTE conference so Mr Johnston has been our substitute teacher. For maths Mr Johnston has given us some information about what the ratio is for the colours of the m&m's found in a packet. We have learnt many things about M&M's but the most interesting thing to find out about was the facts. They were very surprising and helped me learn about something I did not know before. The picture above is a photo of the images you will find on my groups presentation. Today my group and I have presented our M&M's DLO to the class. It was a bit less organised than I wanted but I felt confident and my group sounded confident. The most nervous situation we had to deal with was being first but our grouped worked very well and we all contributed to the slides. When we presented our findings and estimations we talked about the amount of M&M's we found in our packet and what colours are more plentiful than others. We also read the history about M&M's and facts we found out about the famous confectionery brand. Did you know that orange replaced red when scientists thought that red dye played a role in the increase of peoples chances of getting cancer?

Preparation for School Assembly - Attitude

Panmure bridge has an assembly every Friday so that Mr Johnston (principal) and the student leaders can discuss what is happening in our school and how our learning benefits our future endeavours. Like every formal event it is always organised beforehand and is always rehearsed. When it is practise time I help the presenters and who ever is presenting the tidy kiwi to be confident and to strive for excellence. Practising will help build their confidence and will hopefully benefit them in the future. Confidence is a great quality as it will help you overcome social barriers, criticism by others, and it will help you to interact with others.

Food Technology - Chocolate Chip Muffins

Today was our fifth session of food tech with Mrs Tuipolotu (cooking teacher). We were really excited because this was our second time cooking it and we know how delicious the muffins are. We followed the 3 instructions that were compulsory which is follow the instructions, correctly measure the ingredients and being able to read the ingredients properly. I worked with Ofa to cook 12 chocolate chip muffins and we enjoyed cooking together. The most important thing we learnt today is to not under mix or over mix the mixture. If you over mix it the air in the mixture will diminish and your cupcakes will not rise. if you under mix it flour will be visible in the baking and the mixture will be very dense and not pleasant to eat.

Chocolate Chip Muffin Recipe:

Step 1 - 1, 1/2 cup of Sugar.Flour

Step 2 - 1/2 cup of sugar

Step 3 - 1/2 cup of oil, 1/2 cup of milk

Step 4 - 1/4 cup of cocoa, chocolate chips

Step 5 - 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence

Step 6 - 1 egg

Step 7 - Mix all ingredients and scoop 1 teaspoons each muffin into muffin tray

Step 8 - Bake 180 degrees for 15 minutes

HIIT - High Intensity Interval Training

As we are partaking in a study, we have been doing a circuit of different exercise and the one thing they all have in common is that they all help improve one essential thing that will help you have a great workout session. This week we will be focusing on the core muscle and our strength by doing three sets of squats, pull ups, and push ups. These are physically challenging but I enjoyed it because it boosted my sense of focus and determination to strive for excellence. We were in a group of six doing this orientation and our partners were there helping us improve our techniques and were there supporting us when we felt like giving up..

Tech Reflection - Food Technology

Today was our first time cooking a savoury dish with Mrs Tuipolotu. Today Ofa and I made twelve ham and cheese quiche. Firstly we cut the pastry into twelve and put them into a muffin tray, then  we diced the ham finely and added the grated cheese and the ham into our pastry. After that we whisked the eggs and milk then poured the liquid mixture over all the quiches. Lastly we set the temperature of the oven to 180 degrees and cooked it for 15 minutes. I really enjoyed cooking today because we are now cooking a variety of different cooking techniques and dishes. The ingredients are:

A slice of ham
Cheese (grated)
4 eggs
1/2 cup of milk

My Personal Passion - Learning About War

Excellence and innovation is one of our school values and military personals are great role models for this value and that is one of the reason I enjoy learning about the war. I also like looking at timelines that shows the advancement of weaponry and learning about the leaders and how they conducted certain  situations such as a German invasion or a British military strike. In my  DLO explains why I enjoy learning about war and a collection of photos from: WW1, WW2, Vietnam war, and the Iraq war. People who serve their country should be widely appreciated and also should receive more appreciation for their life risking hard work.

Academic Achievements - Excellence and Innovation

This term I have been doing my best to get work done on time and try to perform the best I can in every area of learning. This DLO shows the fears I have overcame and some of my proud achievement of this term. It has taken some time and a lot of hard work but the result is amazing and this has benefit my sense of focus towards learning. I am really proud of myself that I am now able to work with my peers and contribute because last term I found it hard and frustrating to work with someone else.

Book review - Wonder

This term I have read: Wonder, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Hunger Games. I've decided to do a book review on the moving and inspirational book of Wonder. Wonder is an amazing book written by R.J. Palacio. I found the book very moving and has used strong vocabulary which painted a vivid picture in my head. Wonder is about August who is a boy with a form of deformity and is constantly bullied or is widely looked as inferior and is judged by his looks and not his personality.

Mrs Linda - Excellence and Innovation

For this activity I decided to show some appreciation towards the hard work Mrs Linda puts in. Her hard work is widely appreciated by students and teachers at Panmure Bridge School. Mrs Linda helps teachers with some of their duties and she helps struggling children develop an understanding of what they are supposed to do. Mrs Linda has many qualities that could be envied many nut her most outstanding qualities she possesses is compassion and her great sense of humour. Thank you Mrs Linda for all the hard work you put into helping people and for finding the time to help us.

HIIT - High Intensity Interval Training

High intensity interval training is a programme our school has part-taked in to help the Auckland University to help prove their research. This test is to see if doing physical activity helps us develop a stronger sense of focus in our learning. This orientation we have been doing split squats, split squat pulse, split squat jumps, and my favourite, star jumps. I found doing these exercises physically challenging and my bones started to ache. I have found that HIIT has benefited my learning and has been really fun to do.

KiwiCan Reflection - Integrity

This term our theme for KiwiCan is integrity and Miss Lily and Mr Matt. Integrity is a quality everyone should have as the behaviour and manners we show will have a positive affect on future generations. Integrity means to be honest or to have have powerful knowledge to correctly conduct certain situations. This week the value we have been learning about is accountability. Accountability is when you take responsibility for the negative actions you have displayed. People who do not show accountability will have their actions reflected on other students or their future endeavours. At school you will be able to see integrity when students are trying to settle their differences in a peaceful way. The most important place integrity can be exhibited  is within class and our learning. Accountability can be found when you have accidentally hurt a friend and you apologise, or when you remember to bring deodorant and your P.E. uniform on a Thursday. A great way to show accountability is when you have not finished set work and you do it at home. We have played fun games to show how we can demonstrate integrity and accountability.

Comrades Ultra Marathon - South Africa

The comrades ultra marathon was recognised of a ex-member of the armed force who wanted to remember his fellow soldiers who had passed away in the war. The first comrade ultra marathon started in 1921 with 34 people from age of 20 years and older, compared to the 2018 comrade ultra marathon (that happened on Sunday, June 10) there was 20,000 people who took part in the ultra marathon that was 90 km long. This is a really common sport now and even people from the age of 80 years old continue to run this event. In my perspectives I think this is a really fun sport even though your running for a long time but you have a lot of people around you that encourage you to never give up. Most people in this race are determined to do this race but fatigued at the end. As part of our reading task we were to create a DLO about the comrade ultra marathon. In my group there was Jeremiah, San Kyaw, Tiava and me. We included relevant information such as the map showing the two destinations of the race, the qualities possessed by comrade runners. Why?, why is there a cut of time?, how might the runners feel if they got pulled out of the race, words and definitions of the qualities we wrote, and also photos/videos that showed the 5 qualities we wrote down. Our group really enjoyed researching about the comrade ultra marathon and hope that one day we try out this race.

Set Rich Task - Fractions of An Amount

Today for our rich task Ms Kirkpatrick gave us a word problem to solve out which included 7 students and $202 that had to be given out. I have worked collaboratively with Ofa. We found this word problem easy because there were a methods we used which was reading the word problem backwards. This sounds unusual but it helped Ofa and I find our answers. The person who received the most money was Melissa who earned $49 and the person who received the less money was Liz who earned $7. I enjoyed solving out this problem and hope to do another one that is based on money and fractions.

Math - Man - Fractions

Today I have played a game which helps people with their fraction knowledge. It is a maths version of the classic game pac - man. It asks us fraction related questions and then we eat the ghost with the answer on them. I answered 29 correctly and only stopped at level 7.  I will replay the game to try beat my score. I found this quite easy but I still enjoyed playing the game.

Temperature - New York and London

Today was our first maths session of the week and we have been looking at finding fractions of an amount. This DLO shows you my working out from the following question, Question: The weather forecaster says that it is 200 F (Fahrenheit) in London but only 7/10 as hot in New York. How hot is it in New York? I firstly had to find the equation in the question. It is always important to read the question over to make sure you have all the information. After that I found what 1/10 of 200 is. The answer is 20. Lastly, I multiplied 20 and 7 which gave me the answer 140 F. I found answering the questions easy but to add supporting evidence was what I found the most difficult.

Rippa Rugby - Kiwisport

This week we have been learning how to side step and have been working with our reaction times with Hamish (rippa rugby coach). We were firstly split into three teams. Two teams would play a game of rippa rugby and the winning team will continue playing the other benched team. After that we practised our side stepping. We placed a defender opposite us then we side stepped him and made sure he did not rip our tags off. After we played a game where two groups faced each other and we all shared a number with the person on the other team. When Hamish called our numbers we would run and one person would have to attack and one defended. To make it harder he started calling more numbers to the court. I found side stepping a bit difficult because I kept making sure he did not rip my tag off.

KiwiCan - Integrity

Every week we go to KiwiCan to learn skills that helps us develop great qualities such as positive relationships. This term we have been learning about integrity. The definition of integrity in a simple way is owning up to your wrongs even if know one saw it. To make learning about integrity more fun we played a game. It was a game that required total honesty and concentration. This week we scored 20 pizza points which is not bad.

Student Led Conferences

Student led conferences are an opportunity for students at Panmure bridge School to share their learning with their parents. Yesterday was the time for us to share our learning. I brought my mother into my classroom and firstly introduced her to my teachers. We then looked at the work on the wall and I showed her the work I did. My favourite thing to show her was my Treaty of Waitangi reading work. After that I showed her my 2018 learning journey DLO which had links to an activity I did in reading, writing, maths, and inquiry. I chose all my best work from those subjects then she had the opportunity to talk to my teachers.

Tech Reflection - Cooking

Today was our second session for food tech with Mrs Tuipolotu. We baked chocolate chips muffin and we were ecstatic because we loved eating muffins from bakeries. Ofa and I have worked together to make this. We had individual jobs which had to be done in a certain time. Ofa was putting in all our recipe in our big bowl while I  was turning on the oven and getting our muffin liners ready. At the end Ofa and I had 6 muffins each. The recipe for our muffins is:

1. A Big Silver bowl

2. 1,1/2 cup of Sugar and Flour and 1 bowl of chocolate chip

3. 1/2 cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon of cocoa

4. 1/3 cup of oil, 1 egg

5. 1/2 cup of milk

6. mix well and scoop

7. Bake 180 degrees for 15 minutes

8. Clean up

How Does Wi-Fi Work - Explanation

This week we have revisited learning how to write an explanation. This explanation is a guide that outlines the difficult procedures our devices have to go through before you send an image or connect to the internet. The question is 'How does wi-fi work?' Wi-fi is a light which does not produce heat and is invisible to the human eye. To get wi-fi it has to let off frequency and vice versa for nuclear weapons and when radio stations reach for their audience. To learn more about wi-fi her is the link to my explanation.

Body System Quiz

Today I have completed a quiz on the different body systems in our bodies. It asked questions about the position of things in our body and what their job is. The quiz asked questions like where is the smallest bone found and it gives optional answers. Doing this quiz has expanded my knowledge about the human body and about the different body systems.

Newspaper Article - Cinema Attendance

This week Ms Kirkpatrick maths group examined a continuous data that showed the cinema attendance by age group and year. First we were to answer a questions based on the data. TiavaOfa and I worked collaboratively together to answer it. Some of the questions were: In which year was attendance highest for the 25-34 age group? What happened in 1992 and 1994 to the attendance for 15-24 year old? How else could the data be displayed? It was really interesting to see that in 1999 15-24 year old attendance to cinemas increased comparing it to 1984 where it was really low. At the end Ofa and I were to make a newspaper article based on the data. We were make our own Newspaper headline and we decided to call our article 'New Blockbusters. Captivating or monotonous?'

Classroom Age - Fractions

This week one of our set tasks challenged our fraction knowledge. The question was 'in the classroom, ⅔ of the children are ten years old. ½ of the remaining third are nine years old. Four children are 11 years old. How many children are there in the classroom altogether?' For this particular question Ofa and I had to firstly figure out the amount of students in the whole class. The answer to that part of the question is 24. If their were four eleven year old's and that is 1/2 of 1/3, that means that their are also four nine year old's. Lastly we subtracted eight from 24 then the rest of the children are ten years old. At the end we figured out that their were, four eleven year old children, four nine year old children, and 16 ten year old children.

Reflex Experiment

In inquiry we have been learning about the different body systems and this experiment provided evidence to support our learning of how our body systems help us in everyday life. First experiment was the visual test which meant that our partner would drop the ruler without telling us and with the other partner looking at the ruler. After that we participated in the hearing test. The hearing test needed one of the partners to the

Life In 1870

Life in 1870 was not easy for a woman because they were constantly abused physically and emotionally. They were not given the basic rights men received nor did they pursue a career they wanted instead most of them were stay homed wives. There were exceptions, for examples women could be maids or teachers. For this activity my group and I looked at the education act of 1877. The education act of 1877 made education compulsory and made it free.

Charlotte Anne DLO

This term we have been looking at a pioneer of women rights who stood for women rights by using peaceful stands. Her name was Charlotte Anne. She was not the typical women of her time period because she did what was called man's work and she wore male clothes. John T Diamond wrote a poem about this inspirational women and it is called the Ballad Poem. Her legacy is inspiring and I have learnt a lot from her.

Samoan Language Week

This week is Samoan language week and to embrace the culture of some of our pupils at school LS1 and LS2 learnt basic phrases and the cultural beliefs of Samoa. My group consisted of Oscar, Leroy and Te Pounamu. We decided to do a DLO based on their flag and their coat of arms. One thing I learnt was that they gained independence in 1962. Were you aware that the Samoan language is the second most spoken language in Auckland?

Ballad Poem

We have been learning about a women  who showed men that women can be as good as men. She wore jeans which was not considered social protocol in 1870's. She was accepted by other workers and not seen as someone different. She was known as a pioneer. She led women to fight for their beliefs and her peaceful resolution is noticed by many people.

Line Graph - Maths

This week we have been looking at a line graph that shows the amount of people that go to the cinemas every year. According to the graph the most popular time to go to the cinemas was during 1940 - 1950. We think that ww2 had a positive effect on ticket sales because people were eager for more information about what is happening. Sanujan and I wrote a short article talking about the graph. Click here for the article.

Tech Reflection - Cooking

Today we have started the new orientation and my group will be doing cooking. The three things we will learn from cooking is learning how to listen to instructions, choosing the right ingredients, and how to measure the ingredients correctly. Today we made pancakes but using a different technique because I usually use butter not oil. I will be working with Ofa for this orientation.
